The main focus of the Engineering PhD programme is on applied research, and we enjoy strong collaboration with the industry on core issues such as next generation building environment, energy systems, materials, embedded ICT-based systems, production technologies and novel products with improved functionality.

Research facilities

Within all four engineering fields, advanced laboratory facilities are available. Graduate students are expected to take part in developing novel equipment.

Collaboration with the industry also ensures access to state-of-the-art industrial R&D facilities.

Geographic location

The department’s localisation strategy aims at ensuring that the educations and research activities are placed in the scientific environment to which they are most closely related. So the graduate engineering students are located at different engineering sites:

  • Biological and chemical engineering are located at Aarhus University Campus.
  • Computer engineering, electronics, ICT and healthcare technologies are located at IT-Katrinebjerg in the northern part of Aarhus.
  • Civil and architectural engineering as well as mechanical and materials engineering are located at Navitas at the port of Aarhus.

Aside from these locations, the department has research activities at Research Center Foulum (biosystems engineering) located one hour north-west of Aarhus.

These academic environments help strengthen the growing cluster of technology centres in Aarhus and ensure continued positive commercial development in the region.

Employment after graduation

Most engineering graduates take up a career in the industry or in consultancy; both are areas where project leadership is important, and this often becomes a stepping stone towards leadership.
